This City use to be populated by many Spanish individual and still do. The first inhabitants of Key West were the Calusa, a Native American tribe. It is know that in 1513, Ponce de Leon landed/sailed among Key West. But back then it was called Cayo Hueso, the original Spanish name for Key West. This may have been back when Florida was a Spanish Colony. The Native American Name was Bone key, which is just a translation of Cayo Hueso in Spanish.

This referred back to how the Spanish would fight their battle leaving the bones of the dead to bleach in the sun, deriving its name Bone key. Among the common languages of English, and Spanish; Italian, French and German has a small percentage spoken in Key West as of 2000.
