CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES
The city of Pembroke Pines came into existence in the year 1960. The name ‘Pembroke Pines’ was garnered due to the city’s location, which was along Pembroke Road and because of the many Pine trees in the area. Earl of Pembroke, a British man, may have been an early landowner of the cityIndians were suggested to be the first inhabitants in the city. The tribe of Indians is known as “Archaic.” They are said to have appeared about 4,000 years ago. What Human remains that date back to about 10,000 years back have been discovered. This leads researchers to think that the Indians may not have been the very first residents of the area. With Indians in the area, this town was used as agricultural land by dairy farms. Dr. Walter Smith Kipnis was the first Mayor of the area. Before officially being named as a city, Pembroke had been divided into two divisions Pembroke Pines and the Village of Pembroke Pines. Tension grew strong and disputes arose amongst divisions. An election was held to combine the divisions into one city, Pembroke Pines. Because the area of the city was about less than a square mile, Joseph LaCroix, a developer donated his 320 acres land north of Pines Boulevard. With this much needed expansion new properties and government buildings were included. The Broward Correctional Institute, CB Smith Park, and the Hollywood Sporatorium are a few of the additions. Because Pembroke Pines was inland, many southern residents migrated due to hurricane Andrew. Thousands of homes were destroyed, this left owners craving safer, more elevated homes. With the population booming new problems arrived. Schools became well overpopulated. To lessen the load, Charles Dodge started a charter school system. Charter schools in this area are ranked one of the best in Florida. As of 2005 Pembroke Pines is home to about 150,104 Floridians
